In recent by-elections across the Western Cape including Stellenbosch, Saldanha Bay, and George, a pattern keeps repeating itself.
Wards are being decided by very small numbers. Sometimes fewer than 100 votes decide who wins. At the same time many people are not voting at all.
This means something serious.
Elections are not being decided by big political change. They are being decided by small margins split votes and missing voters.
So we must ask why do we keep voting but nothing changes.
Are We Even Registered Properly?
Many people are not registered in the correct ward or not registered at all.
This means people are excluded before voting even starts communities lose power without realising it and results do not reflect the full community.
We all have a role. Check your registration. Help others register. Make sure people are in the correct ward. If registration is wrong, democracy is alre
A lack of ID can also prevent people from registering to vote.
Small Margins Decide Everything
In ward elections you do not need a majority. You just need more votes than the next person.
That means someone can win by 50 or 100 votes while thousands stay home or split their vote. So the real issue is how are we voting and who benefits when our votes are divided.
We Are Splitting Our Own Vote
Many parties look similar especially in how they speak to communities.
Group 1 community or identity based – NCC, PA, Al Jama ah
Group 2 governance or centre right – DA, Freedom, Front Plus, ActionSA
Group 3 liberation or mass parties – ANC, EFF, MK
When similar parties compete in the same space they divide voters who actually want similar things and that division changes outcomes.
We Do Not Even Choose Our Candidate
Political parties choose who stands in our wards not us.
Sometimes these candidates do not even live in our communities.
Career Politicians
We see the same names again and again because politics has become a career path not a community responsibility.

What Communities Are Doing Elsewhere
In Makana people organised themselves when services collapsed.
Abahlali baseMjondolo made a strategic decision to support the EFF based on land and dignity issues.
The lesson is simple. People do not only vote from identity they vote for impact.
We Must Vote Strategically
Ask yourself where will my vote make the biggest impact are we splitting votes between similar candidates are we weakening ourselves without realising it.
Women and Youth Are The Power
Women are the majority of voters. Young people are the future.
Yet they are not properly engaged or organised.
What We Fought ForF
People like Ashley Kriel ,Coline Williams, Anton Fransch, Vuyisile Mini, Ruth First and many others gave their lives.
But today poverty, unemployment, spatial apartheid, and inequality remain.
Final Point – Your Vote Has Power
This is not just another election.
If we keep splitting our votes we weaken ourselves.
If we do not register properly we remove ourselves.
If we do not vote others decide for us.
We have to do better, not just emotionally but strategically.
Our vote is power, but only if we use it wisely.
A Luta Continua!!!
Vote wisely!
