An E-Gaming Room has officially been launched at the Hanover Park Library and I already know there are some people who are saying it’s a waste of money.

BUT… Here’s the thing. it’s only a waste of money if you don’t understand the realities of underprivileged communities.

Offering Alternative Spaces for Our Youth

For too long, our young people have been told what not to do, but very few people have invested in giving them meaningful alternatives. We complain about youngsters standing on street corners, getting involved in gangsterism, drugs, crime and klipgooiery, yet when opportunities are created that actually speak to their interests, some people suddenly question the investment.

Gaming today is not just about entertainment. It exposes young people to technology, digital literacy, problem solving, teamwork, communication, content creation, coding, graphic design, e-sports, streaming and careers that many of us never had access to growing up.

The digital economy is growing every day and our Cape Flats children deserve to be part of it too. Not every child wants to play rugby. Not every child wants to play soccer. Not every child wants to be in a choir or on a sports field. Some children connect through technology, egaming, digital creativity and innovation. They deserve spaces too.

Alternative Long-Term Investment in Crime Prevention

Every positive space we create is one less opportunity for negative influences to fill the gap. This is our answer to the klipgooiers. This is our answer to boredom. This is our answer to hopelessness. This is what investing in prevention looks like.

We have to give credit to Alderman Antonio Van der Rheede for understanding that if we want different outcomes for our youth, we need to invest in projects that young people actually want to be part of.
You don’t build safer communities by only policing problems. You build safer communities by creating opportunities.

A library is no longer just a place for books. It is a place for learning, innovation, creativity, digital access and preparing young people for the future. The new E-Gaming Room at Hanover Park Library Cape Town is doing exactly that.

Well done to everyone involved in making this happen. Hanover Park continues to show that despite all the challenges we face, we are capable of creating opportunities, embracing innovation and investing in our youth.
