Chaos erupted in Ravensmead today as gangs and police exchamged fire in what Cape Town MMC for Safety & Security JP Smith says is a dispute over confiscated alcohol.
In a standoff between gangs and police today, Ravensmead SAPS had to call in backup from other police stations as well as from the Cape Town’s Metro Police LEAP Unit.

City of Cape Town MMC for Safety & Security JP Smith in a statement today said that earlier today the SAPS came under fire from gang members and have requested urgent backup.
LEAP members responded and assisted Ravensmead SAPS. The shoot out continued as LEAP and SAPS drove the gangs back and who have now sought refuge within one of the apartment flats.
SAPS Airwing has been activated, as well as the Metro Police Gang and Drug Task Team, with several hardened vehicles surrounding the premises.
A SAPS member has been shot in the upper body and has been rushed to hospital, as well as a LEAP officer that had been shot in the leg. It is believed the violence escalated after members of the 28 gang stormed the police station demanding the return of alcohol that had been previously confiscated.
After surrounding the area, a total of 8 suspects were arrested. Forensics is on scene processing exhibits as well as performing forensic tests on those arrested.
The SAPS member who was shot luckily had the bullet only graze his forehead. The Law Enforcement female that was shot is now in a stable condition and currently undergoing medical scans.
