Having talent is one thing, but understanding how to turn it into a sustainable career is another. For emerging young creatives, access to the right knowledge, industry contacts and opportunities can make a significant difference. This is where Music Exchange, MEX26, comes in. Returning to Cape Town on Saturday, 31 October 2026, the annual conference offers young and independent talent an opportunity to learn directly from experienced local and international industry professionals about what it takes to navigate the entertainment business.

Taking place at the Protea Fire & Ice Hotel in Cape Town, MEX26 is built around the theme “Navigating Today’s Entertainment Economy: Strategies, Skills and Opportunities for Success”. While music remains central to the conference, its lessons extend to the broader entertainment industry, including film, television, radio, podcasting, advertising, technology and entrepreneurship. Hosted by broadcaster DJ Eazy, the event brings together 12 speakers to share practical knowledge that emerging creatives might otherwise struggle to access.

Annually, Music Exchange also partners with Bruinou.com and Fifth Element Live, to give selected young individuals who are entering the entertainment industry an opportunity to experience MEX for the first time. For many their attendance has opened new doors, created opportunities, and given them insights into industry knowledge that others have taken years to master.

“The improvements we have made in the past year since attending Music Exchange has made a huge impact on our growth at Pebbles” said Charne Pienaar, young owner of Pebbles Film Company, who also works as an artist manager.

Turning Talent into Opportunity

Understanding the business side of a creative career is essential. Knowing how royalties work, protecting intellectual property, securing publishing income and exploring music licensing for film and television can help creatives make informed decisions about their work. MEX26 will address these areas through sessions featuring SAMRO CEO Annabell Lebethe, whose keynote is titled “The Future of the Entertainment Economy”, followed by a SAMRO leadership panel exploring how rights can translate into revenue.

Other sessions will tackle artificial intelligence, international publishing opportunities, artist branding, streaming and music supervision. For young creatives still finding their feet, this kind of knowledge can help them recognise opportunities, avoid costly misunderstandings and approach their careers with greater confidence.

Gaining Knowledge, Building Relationships, Creating Opportunities

We spoke to Laverne Maart aka HippKhoi who attended MEX25 in October last year.
Laverne is an artist manager and event organiser, working with both young emerging talent as well as already established artists from the Cape Flats and further beyond. She is also a content contributor on Bruinou.com writing about societal issues as well as topics that cover the entertainment industry.

“Attending Music Exchange is incredibly important for upcoming artists because the music industry is about more than just making music! it’s about knowledge, relationships and opportunities.”

“These spaces give emerging artists access to industry professionals, valuable insights and practical knowledge that they might not otherwise have access to. It’s an opportunity to network, ask questions, understand the business side of music and learn from people who have walked the journey before them.”

“For independent artists especially those coming from under resourced communities, access to information can be the difference between having talent and building a sustainable career. We need more platforms that empower artists with knowledge, connections and tools to navigate the industry confidently. Talent opens doors but knowledge helps you stay in the room.”

Access Beyond the Conference

Equally important is the opportunity to engage with industry professionals, build relationships and learn from people who understand how the entertainment business operates locally and internationally. These connections can help emerging talent better understand where their skills fit into the industry and what steps they need to take next.

A MEX26 ticket costs R150 and includes four days of access to FAME Week Africa activities, from Wednesday through Saturday. For artists, producers, songwriters, DJs, composers, managers, students and aspiring entertainment entrepreneurs, this creates additional opportunities to learn and network beyond the conference itself.

Founded by Martin Myers, Music Exchange continues to connect aspiring creatives with experienced professionals and practical industry knowledge, and that happens throughout the year.
“Beyond the annual summit, MEX continues its mission year-round through regular Workshops and Master Classes. There is also The Business of Entertainment weekly radio show on CapeTalk, hosted every Thursday at 9pm by myself, Martin Myers, and is available as a podcast.”
“These are all designed to keep the creative community learning, earning, and growing throughout the year.” says Martin Myers, who is also a regular content contributor on Bruinou.com.
