Reconciliation Day is a Misnomer

Clearly the onus for the Reconciliation we are expected to celebrate on Reconciliation Day is solely placed on the aggrieved with a far much higher expectation of Forgiveness but there is very little to almost absolutely no speak of Repentance.
Something is missing.
Can we honestly expect them to forgive us if we are not truly remorseful and contrite?
Yes often people actually do forgive us when we have wronged them, but it does not mean we can expect them to continue treating us as if we did nothing wrong. If we are not truly contrite, can we honestly say that there was reconciliation between us?
It requires a lot of effort from both the aggrieved to be accommodating and the aggressor to show regret and make willing sacrifices towards recompense.
It is the stuff that Real Reconciliation is made of.

I was huddled at the bus stop, partially sheltered from the South-Easter’s icy fingers, as it fiddled at the crevice of my coat and pinched my cheeks playfully. Ominous clouds hung overhead, heavily pregnant with rain, an imminent birth soon to be unburdened from the heavens.
He appeared as if from nowhere, his expression as innocent as his clothes were threadbare. Dirty blue jeans, scuffed sneakers and a cotton sweater with the buttons done up wrong were his body’s only defence against the elements.

A new documentary about how harmful industrial fishing is destroying fishing communities in the Western Cape took the runner-up award at the International 1-Minute Film Festival in Cape Town last week.
The online documentary by Greenpeace, called GUTTED: THE FIGHT OF KALK BAY FISHERS, focuses on the Kalk Bay fishing community. It explores how laws favouring the industrialisation of fishing in South Africa have not only changed the socioeconomic situation of these communities, but also, the once vibrant and community-centric culture.
