The recent racist rant by the ANC mayor of Welkom demonstrates the literal danger of allowing apartheid-era slurs like ‘boesman’ to be used in post-democratic South Africa.

In a video that circulated on social media recently, Welkom Mayor Nkosinjani Speelman used the term “boesman” to describe coloured people during an address to members of the South African National Defence Force ahead of their deployment into communities during the countrywide Covid-19 lockdown.

I write with tears. Today, South Africa has lost a great spiritual leader and his family and loved ones have lost a strong loving force in their lives.
Reverend Leonard Maart was a humble man who raised a beautiful family and was very proud of his heritage and his community.
I’m going to try and not make this little tribuite about me, however, he influenced me greatly 25 years ago (when I first went to South Africa) so I thought this would be a good opportunity to share my experience with Reverend Maart from that time period in South Africa, that space, those emotions, apartheid, understanding Cape Town, etc…

That Plant In The Garden of Angles Where Angels Fear to Tread

I'm so excited! We're going to see Charlize's Angles tomorrow!
It's going to be shown in the Botanical Gardens. Apparently you get Angles in Botany too. It's called an Axil.
Something to do with the angle at which a new branch grows from another branch...
Anyways... That probably doesn't even fit into any of this...

What I'm really excited about is that I will finally get to see the mystical Hypotenuse Plant growing in its natural state.
