We remember and pay tribute to the piano prodigy and Stellenbosch University student, Antonio Britto, and tell you about the Back-a-Buddy campaign for his memorial

When Antonio Britto started playing Piano at age 13, he was older than when most children start out. Little did anyone expect that in 2019, at just 15, he would travel to New York to represent South Africa at the Talent America competition and return home as a winner.
Now, seven years later, family, friends, fellow students and members of the Stellenbosch University community are mourning the loss of the gifted young musician and student.

Antonio Amelio Alec Britto, from the Davidsonville, near Roodepoort in Gauteng, a fourth-year International Studies student at Stellenbosch University, passed away on Saturday, 30 May, at the age of 22.

The young prodigy who took the piano world by storm

We at Bruinou.com first heard about Antonio through his mom, Yulandi Britto, after he competed in South Africa’s National Performing Arts competition in March of 2019 and was selected to represent South Africa at Talent America in New York later that same year.
At the time, the talented young pianist had been playing the piano for only two years.

We, of course, on the old, now defunct version of our website, shared Antonio’s achievements as a master pianist, and also shared videos on our old BruinouTV of Antonio’s performances.

Despite his relatively short time on the keys, Antonio Britto impressed judges on the international stage, securing first place for one performance, second place for another piece, and receiving the Divisional Winner Award for his age group.

A Grade 10 learner at Hoërskool Roodepoort at the time, his achievements drew attention both locally and abroad. Many regarded him as a piano prodigy, with his remarkable rise in classical music demonstrating a natural talent that seemed to defy expectations.

A remarkable student who added value to his university

The Department of Music at Stellenbosch University paid tribute to Antonio, describing him as a valued alumnus of the department’s Piano Division and a former chairperson of the student society Musicultus.

According to the department, he was a familiar face at the Konservatorium’s Endler Concert Series and departmental festivals, where he regularly assisted as a concert assistant and usher.

His love for classical music, together with his leadership qualities, musical ability and outgoing personality, made him an important part of the department’s community over the years.

“He will be remembered with gratitude for the contribution he made to our community and for the many connections he formed within it,” the department said in a statement.

Tributes have also highlighted the role Antonio Britto played in wider student life at the university.

He served as Vice-Chairperson of QueerUS during the 2025/2026 term and was known for advocating for students who often felt overlooked or underrepresented. Friends and fellow students have described him as a natural leader whose compassion and commitment to helping others left a lasting impression.

Beyond his academic achievements and student leadership roles, those closest to him say he was a young man who refused to allow hardship to stand in the way of his goals.

BackaBuddy campaign to help family with memorial costs

A BackaBuddy fundraising campaign launched in support of his family revealed that Antonio had recently lost his NSFAS funding. Rather than abandoning his studies, he took on two jobs to support himself while continuing his education.

Campaign organisers said his determination reflected the resilience that had defined much of his life.

Raised in Roodepoort by a single mother who worked tirelessly to provide for him and his two siblings, Antonio is described as a compassionate, driven and intelligent young man whose future held enormous promise.

Funds raised will assist with transportation costs between the Western Cape and Gauteng, as well as funeral, accommodation and memorial expenses. Organisers have also indicated that should the campaign exceed its target, additional funds will be directed towards supporting students and causes that Antonio cared deeply about.

Antonio Britto’s Legacy of Touching Countless Lives

In their appeal, organisers describe him as someone who pursued his dreams with determination until the very end and whose loss is deeply felt by all who knew him.

As tributes continue to pour in from across South Africa, many have reflected on a life that, although cut tragically short, left a significant impact on those around him.

From a teenage piano prodigy representing his country on an international stage to a student leader committed to serving others, Antonio Britto’s journey touched countless lives.

For those mourning his passing, the memories he created, the music he shared and the people he inspired will remain long after the final note has faded.

We at Bruinou.com extend our sincerest condolences to Yulandi, Jordan, Micah, and everyone else who loved Antonio.

Rest in Peace Antonio Britto
