The DA’s Biggest Mistake Could Hand Gayton McKenzie’s PA the 2026 Election

The DA’s attacks on Gayton McKenzie may be strengthening his political brand ahead of the 2026 election instead of weakening it.

Every time the Democratic Alliance thinks it has Gayton McKenzie on the ropes, something unexpected happens. Instead of losing ground, he gains it. Instead of being on the defensive, he changes the subject. Instead of answering the attack, he puts the DA on trial.

The latest battle proves the point. The DA hits him with a Public Protector complaint over the roughly R31 million spent on the FIFA World Cup programme. McKenzie immediately counters with the more than R800 million in housing funding that the DA led Western Cape Government reportedly returned unspent while thousands of poor families remain on waiting lists. In one move, he shifts the conversation from his record to theirs.

This is why the attacks do not stick. McKenzie is not trying to persuade his critics. He is speaking to his supporters, energising them and reaching voters who feel politically homeless or abandoned by their own parties. Every attack becomes another opportunity to strengthen his brand as the politician taking on the establishment.

DA Needs to Change Their Political Narrative

The DA keeps fighting the wrong battle. It attacks his conduct. He attacks its record. It talks about complaints. He talks about housing, poverty and broken promises. While the DA argues over R31 million, Gayton McKenzie gets people talking about R821 million and the families still waiting for a home. He decides what the public remembers.

That is why he is beginning to look like South Africa’s Teflon politician. The harder the DA comes after him and the Pariotic Alliance, the tighter his supporters rally around him. Every attack gives him more attention, more relevance and another chance to grow his support.

With 4 November 2026 approaching, the DA should ask itself one question. Is it exposing Gayton McKenzie, or is it helping him build the political brand that could carry him and the PA into the election?
