Sonnet IV – Severation
I measured once the distance that’s between
the centre of your beating heart and mine –
it cuts across the globe in one curved line –
six thousand nine hundred and seventeen
remorseless miles; that seperates skin from skin,
and heart from heart. Souls meant to intertwine –
severed! Consoled in hours spent online
with on-off pulses on a cold, curved screen.
Then walking home one night past sleeping cars
with heavy-headed workers walking by,
I looked up through the haze and saw the stars
Orion, Crux and Scorpius, up so high –
you see them through your bedroom window glass
while looking up towards a cold, dark sky.
