There’s no doubt that Jazz on The Lawn is now firmly established as a permanent fixture on the Cape Town Music Festival Calendar as a Celebration of Cape Jazz Culture.
After the success of Cape Town’s most vibrant and Socially Interactive Jazz Festival that was held at Bevcan Sports Field in Epping Industria on 10 & 11 December 2022, Jazz on the Lawn – JOL will return to the same venue with JOL2023 on the 16th of December.
Presented by Uncle Cal Productions & Band Aid SA, the Jazz On The Lawn Festival on 16 December 2023 builds on a very successful formula that made it a mainstay on the Cape Jazz Events Calendar.
Started 14 years ago, running up to 2012 after which it went into a long hibernation, the popular festival was reignited in 2022.
It first started out as an extension of the G-Spot Leisure Lounge brand with Calvin Peters aka Uncle Cal at the helm of the entertainment lineup.
With a lineup comprising not only some of Cape Town’s top Jazz Musicians, Bands and Entertainers that included top DJ’s & Comedians, along with Radio Presenters as Host MC’s, past editions of Jazz On The Lawn have also included artists from across the country and even around the world.
Aside from the fantastic support from patrons across the Cape Peninsula, this world class festival sees supporters from all over the country and even from neighbouring states like Namibia, as well as overseas toursists travelling to Cape Town to attend.
The magic of the event lies in the fact that it is not only a celebration of Traditional Jazz Funk.
Jazz On The Lawn 2023 is an Authentic Experience of the Unique Cape Jazz Sound & Culture.
WATCH Jazz On The Lawn Being Enjoyed by International Tourists
Although JOL2022 was successful as a two-day festival, it has been decided by the organisers to return to the original formula of having Jazz On The Lawn for one day only. That will allow them to not only focus on presenting a higher calibre of entertainment on stage but also focus more on the overall experience of music fans attending the festival.
JOL2023 has an Impressive Lineup
As with all previous editions of the festival, JOL2023 has an impressive lineup that celebrates our Cape Jazz heritage.
Returning to the 2023 JOL stage is the SAMA-winning singer, songwriter and guitarist Claire Phillips who had the 2022 Jazz On The Lawn crowd in total awe. With her extensive repertoire, the Soulful Star from Belhar will once again be a major attraction at this year’s Jazz on The Lawn Music Festival.
Another crowd favourite, Carmen Xclusive, will definitely have the JOL2023 crowd singing along to her renditions of Jazzed-Up Disco and Funky Jazz songs. In September 2023 Carmen Xclusive performed at Uncle Cal’s Cape Jazz Party in Joburg.
Also joining the lineup is the flamboyant diva Vuvu Kumalo and festivall goers can look forward to the vibrant energy Vuvu Kumalo brings to the JOL2023 stage like she did at the 2023 Matroosfontein Jazz Reunion.
Led by songstress Fancy Galada and bringing their Infectiously Energetic sound to the 2023 Jazz On The Lawn stage, The Fancy Galada Band embodies authentic South African entertainment with their eclectic repertoire, spanning African Traditional, Reggae, Jazz, Pop and Rock music.
WATCH Richard Ceasar Performing at Jazz On The Lawn JOL2022
An alumnus of the original Jazz On The Lawn Festivals over a decade ago, and again performing at JOL2022, Richard Ceasar is still as popular as ever with the JOL crowd and is a welcome addition to the lineup and as much as his fans will know what to expect when he takes to the stage at JOL2023, those who have never heard him play before are in for a pleasant surprise.
SAMA-nominated singer Jarrad Rickets wIth his versatility as a crooner, a jazz singer and pop music performer is also a welcome addition to the lineup and having a huge local and internatonal following, he will certainly keep the 2023 Jazz On The Lawn crowd highly entertained.
Jazz On The Lawn has also gained a repution for showcasing Cape Flats youth talent and for 2023 that comes in the form of the CW Music Foudation. The CWMF is directed by world-renowned jazz guitarist Cameron Ward who himself had a spot on the JOL2022 lineup.
Langarm bands also have many crossover links to the Cape Town Jazz scene with many of the Langarm musicians being highly capable Cape Jazz musicians as well and we look forward to seeing many couples strutting their stuff on the Bevcan Lawn when Cool Sounds performs at JOL2023.
The hugely popular Cape Jazz, Pop, R&B and Funk party band Jeodhouse is a regular on the club scene, often plays top-end corporate events, performed at various Jazz Festivals and also often work on Uncle Cal events or share a stage with Uncle Cal. Renowned for their flair for Disco and R&B Medleys that along with their fantastic cover renditions of popular songs infused with Cape Jazz, Jeodhouse will definitely have something for everyone attending JOL2023.
An absolute treat that we can look forward to at JOL2023 is the band that transformed the Cape Town nightclub scene in the mid-1980’s.
Founded in 1984, Airborne has steadily seen changes in its lineup over its 39 years of existence but fortunately for fans of the band, the only remaining founder member Sean O’Connell has ensured that while remaining relevant with changing times, under his leadership, Airborne has retained the essence of what makes the band a Cape Cultural Icon.
Along with Angelo Cyster on guitar, Andre Webb on bass, Björn Petersen on drums and featuring Leonie Le Roux on vocals, the man on keys, Sean O’Connell, promises to bring the much-loved authentic Airborne Experience to JOL2023.
JOL2023 Host MC’s & DJ’s
Running the show and also putting in some time on the decks will be Uncle Cal who of course is the organiser of Jazz On The Lawn.
Much-loved Cape Town radio personalities, Tyrone Paulsen, Brandon Leigh and Peadon Smith will be joining Uncle Cal in keeping the JOL2023 crowd entertained in between live music sets.
The legendary DJ Brian Bohorne will ensure that there will be a continued musical energy while every next band sets up.
The highly talented multi-generational lineup of JOL2023 embodies the vision of Uncle Cal Productions and Band Aid SA in building a legacy. The ensures that Jazz On The Lawn Jazz on The Lawn is now firmly established as a permanent fixture on the Cape Town Music Festival Calendar as an Authentic Experience of the Unique Cape Jazz Sound & Culture.
As with previous Jazz on The Lawn festivals, there will be community organisations that benefit from the partnership between Uncle Cal Productions and Band Aid SA.
Band Aid SA with Uncle Cal Productions as a custodian is an NPO through which Aid and Support for Community Organisations are processed as the Corporate Social Investment spin-offs from Uncle Cal events and other interactions with corporate partners and sponsors.
