For many young people growing up in Eldorado Park, dreams of global recognition can often feel distant. For Sheldon Tatchell, however, a chair, a clipper and determination became the foundation of a business empire that is now taking him to one of the world’s most prestigious institutions. The founder and CEO of Legends Barber recently announced that he has officially joined a 24-month programme at Harvard Business School, marking another major milestone in a journey that started outside an internet café in Eldos.

Tatchell shared the news on Instagram, reflecting on the road that brought him to this moment. “I’m still in disbelief writing this… From cutting hair on a stoep… to joining Harvard Business School,” he wrote. For many South Africans who have followed his rise over the past decade, the achievement feels bigger than business alone. It represents what can happen when vision, persistence and community support come together.

Built from Determination

Tatchell’s entrepreneurial story has never been one of overnight success. He started cutting hair at the age of 14 and later worked at a bank call centre while trying to build his dream on the side. In earlier interviews, he spoke openly about setbacks, including losing his first shop because of unpaid rent while he was away on honeymoon. Instead of giving up, he returned to cutting hair from clients’ homes after work and over weekends before rebuilding the business from scratch.

That resilience eventually led to the full-time launch of Legends Barber in 2014. What began as a small local operation steadily expanded into one of Southern Africa’s biggest grooming brands. The business now has more than 80 stores across South Africa and neighbouring countries including Botswana, Lesotho and Namibia. Beyond haircuts, the company has expanded into grooming products, training academies and franchise opportunities while creating employment for hundreds of people.

The Exceptional Entrepreneur from Eldos – Sheldon Tatchell

Tatchell’s approach to business has also helped distinguish the brand from many others in the industry. He has consistently emphasised investing in people and developing local talent. In a previous interview, he explained that his goal was to help employees become even better than him at their craft because strong people ultimately build strong businesses.

In our previous Bruinou.com article on, The Exceptional Entrepreneur from Eldos, Sheldon Tatchell was quoted as saying: “You have to build people because people build a business”.

More Than Just a Brand

The meaning behind the name “Legends” also speaks to the community-centred vision that shaped the business. According to Tatchell, the name came from the work he and his team did cutting hair at old age homes, where they referred to elderly residents as “the legends”. That spirit of service has remained part of the company’s identity through community outreach projects, free haircuts and support initiatives in different areas.

Now, Harvard Business School becomes the latest chapter in a journey that continues to inspire many aspiring entrepreneurs across South Africa. Tatchell described the opportunity not simply as personal success, but as a chance to gain more knowledge to better serve communities and grow the business further.

“The mission remains: Learn. Grow. Come back better to serve our people, our business, and our communities,” he wrote in his Instagram post.

For a businessman who started out cutting hair on a stoep in Eldorado Park, joining Harvard Business School is not just another achievement. It is a reminder that local dreams can grow far beyond the streets where they begin.
