The Johannesburg Coloured Accent That’s Taking Over South Africa

Linguist and polyglot, Patricio, breaks down the peculiarities of the Johannesburg English Coloured accent and explores what makes it unique.

Of course, we all, no matter where in South Africa we are from, recognise a Jozi Coloured accent whenever we hear it. However, we don’t think that the Johannesburg Coloured accent is literally taking over South Africa, because that’s the thing about accents; they are regionally (and culturally) different and unique.

What we do think is cool is that Patricio has a way of breaking down English accents from all over the world without criticising any of those accents.
He starts off with singer, Tyla, who is now the world’s most famous speaker of the Joburg Coloured accent.

Can we trust Patricio to knowledgeably talk about the Coloured Accent?

Patricio is a linguist, polyglot, and content creator from London, United Kingdom. He creates videos exploring diverse English accents worldwide, such as Multicultural London English (MLE), Cockney, Caribbean English, and West African English, as well as tips for learning languages like Spanish and Portuguese.
