DISCOVER YOURSELF |
|
We’re often so busy trying to be the best employee, the best boss, the best mother or the best wife, that we often forget the essence of who we are. If you’ve lost sight of yourself, it’s time for some self-discovery. |
“People feel a need to ‘discover’ themselves because somewhere along the way they have forgotten who they are by trying to be other things for other people,” explains Donna McCallum, the “Fairy Godmother” (who helps individuals and companies fulfill their dreams) and author of The Fairy Godmother’s Guide To Getting What you Want. She explains how we get lost in life and suggests ways to rediscover ourselves.
Losing yourself
“In our early childhood, we are unashamed to express who we are and who we want to be,” says McCallum. We’re proud of our dreams and believe our goals, which include anything from being the president to becoming a rock star, can be achieved. “But as we get older, our inherent genius becomes constrained – through our experiences, what other people tell us we can be and can not be or do, etc.”
So when we find ourselves moving further away from who we thought we would and could be, the need to discover ourselves arises. “This need is the soul’s message that you have moved away from the true essence of who you are and it is the soul’s way of guiding you back to your true power,” explains McCallum.
Ways to discover yourself
McCallum suggests the following ways to reconnect with yourself:
– Travel: “The power of travelling and taking time off for a long period of time is that you get time to really reflect and introspect,” she says. “Also, since you are away from the day-to-day routine of your normal life and the people who usually influence you, you get away from the ‘noise’ and you can truly understand your values, who you are and what you want. You also have the power to recreate yourself.” Travel helps you discover an inner strength you never knew existed.
-Be quiet: “Meditate or do yoga – any type of stillness connects us to the soul and the spiritual realm. In this space we get a very clear sense of who we are and of our purpose in this world.”
– Journal or attend personal development workshops: “Writing down your thoughts in a journal and reflecting on them is a powerful tool for understanding who you really are and what you want for your life. Also, any personal development courses or workshops will take you through a process and give you deeper insight into who you really are and what will make you happy in life.”
Strong sense of self
Once you are in touch with who you are, you need to maintain and project a strong sense of self by being authentic. According to McCallum, “people who project a strong sense of self, do so because:
a. they know who they are
b. they are comfortable with who they are
c. they are not afraid to be authentically who they are”.
“You will become a much happier and healthy person when you show who you truly are to the world,” she concludes.
