The Bishop Lavis community is gearing up for an unforgettable day of fun, friendship and heartfelt appreciation for its elders. On Thursday, 6 November 2025, the Bishop Lavis Sports Hall on Lavis Drive will come alive for The Senior Social, a special fundraising event presented by Agapanthus Street Media and the Bishop Lavis Action Community.

From 11am until 2pm, senior citizens, pensioners and community elders will enjoy a day dedicated entirely to them, filled with laughter, music, and memories. Entry is just R60, which includes tea, coffee, snacks and lunch. That’s a small price for a big celebration of life and legacy.

DJs Bring The Rhythm and Nostalgia of The Gumba

This lively gathering promises a host of activities designed to entertain and uplift.
Guests can enjoy poetry readings, karaoke, a field walk, and vibrant art and craft stalls. There will even be prizes for the “Best Dressed Senior.” The vinyl soundtrack for the day will feature a rich mix of Jazz, Soul, Reggae, Funk and Langarm, courtesy of two Cape Flats legends DJ Barney ‘Isibane’ Marthinus and DJ realROZZANO. The records on their turntables will carry not just rhythm and nostalgia, but also the deep community roots they share with Bishop Lavis.

DJ Isibane aka Barney Marthinus, a beloved figure across the Cape Flats, himself now a senior citizen, was once part of the historic Isibane Collective, which used music and gatherings to raise funds during the struggle against apartheid. Through events like the legendary “Gumba” sessions, they helped underprivileged youth access education; a legacy of compassion that continues today.

DJ realROZZANO, meanwhile, brings a rich background as a Hip Hop activist, entrepreneur, and a founding pioneer of the South African Hip Hop Movement who remains active in his work mentoring young creatives. Rozzano is known to have one of the biggest Jazz, Funk, Hip Hop & Soul vinyl collections in South Africa and his presence ensures that this event bridges generations through rhythm and shared experience.

Show Your Support Through the Adopt a Senior Program

Beyond the music and fun, The Senior Social carries a touching initiative: the “Adopt a Senior” program. Community members are invited to sponsor one or more tickets for seniors who might not be able to afford the R60 entry fee. Each ticket provides access to the event as well as refreshments and a meal. Contributions can be made directly to the Bishop Lavis Action Community, and every act of generosity ensures that no elder is left out of this day of joy.
You can EFT direct to Bishop Lavis Action Community, African Bank, Acc No: 20171402315, Savings Account and send proof of payment to Gwen on 073-375-0668.

The Senior Social isn’t just another community event. It’s a heartfelt reminder that our elders are treasures who deserve recognition, laughter, and love. Social events for senior citizens is a form of wellness, and celebrating them reminds us all that unity, music and kindness are the true soul of a strong community.
