Police have sent reinforcements to Manenberg after gang violence claimed 13 lives in just over a week.
A bloody turf war has resulted in daily gunfire in this Cape Flats community. The most recent casualty was a 33-year-old man who was shot in the back in Thibus Road, early on Monday morning
The Manenberg Safety Forum's Roegchanda Pascoe told News24 that the area was tense.
Children were being kept indoors and few dared to venture into the streets, for fear of being caught in the crossfire.
A demonstration was planned for 18:30 on Monday in solidarity against the violence, Pascoe said.
"We have to let our national government know that they have the tools and resources to solve this. They have to do something."
Police in the area said other SAPS divisions had been sent to help in the precinct. Metro police units had also been making their presence felt.
No innocent people had yet been caught in gang gunfire, an officer confirmed.
Last week, the Metro Police's gang and drug task team and stabilisation unit confiscated three illegal firearms in the area in one day.
A 26-year-old man was arrested in possession of a gun and ammunition on Thursday. Police later chased down four men who tossed a gun into a yard while trying to escape.
The gun had been reported stolen in Khayelitsha.
A third gun, a Glock pistol reported stolen in Kraaifontein, was found during a search.
Mayoral committee member for safety and security, JP Smith, in a statement said the guns would be sent for ballistics tests to determine if they could be linked to any crimes.
"Hopefully, these tests will help build solid cases against the suspects arrested. There are far too many illegal firearms on our streets.
"While I commend our officers for their sterling work, I worry that the firearms taken off the streets are simply being replaced by others brought into circulation," he said.
"Cracking the weapons supply chain should be a critical part of policing efforts to quell gang violence."
