After 2015's successful GARAS Vocal Ensemble tour of the Western Cape, KSAAG introduces The Southern Youth Choir from Namibia complimented by a line-up of Cape Town artists who bring an enjoyable diversity of genres to the stage.
The Southern Youth Choir which was established in February 2005 by Mr. Salomon Kinda in essence seeks to draw youth choral talent together and for that matter is made up of learners from the three high schools, namely J.A. Nel High School, Suiderlig High School and P.K. De Villiers High school from //Kharas Region in Namibia.
As a means of promoting our rich linguistic heritage the Khoe and San Active Awareness Group (KSAAG), a registered NPO, hosts The Southern Youth Choir as the part of their series of cultural events between 2-5 December 2016 called SADA |AOKHOEN !NOMAN (Our family roots).
The two shows to be held in Cape Town will be on Friday 2 December starting at 8pm to midnight at the Yes We Can Sport & Jazz Foundation in Pinelands and then on Saturday 3 December from 7pm to 10pm at the Jolly Carp Hall in Retreat.
Tickets are only R50 per person for each of the two evenings and can be purchased on each night at the entrances to the venues.
The Southern Youth Choir will be performing a range of ensemble pieces, choral performances, skits and other presentations.
A sharp focus of the annual KSAAG events is the promotion of First Nation Indigenous Languages and it is therefore to be expected that somepieces will be performed in Khoekhoegowab or Nama as it is commonly known, the most widely spoken of the Khoe & San languages.
As with the inaugural event in 2015 which had a diverse range of artists on the bill to support the GARAS choir, this year's event will also have once again some Capetonian artists performing in support of the Namibian guests.
As with the previous year, the line-up is will again possibly expand on the nights of the events as unconfirmed artists could again deliver impromptu performances making for some interestingly unpredictable fun.
Khoi Khonnexion made up of Glen Arendse, Garth Erasmus & Jethro Louw features Jethro, aka The GHETTO Poet, aka Tanneman !Xam delivering fiery performance poetry against an improvised fusion of mystic sounds from a range of indigenous and contemporary instruments.
Khoi Khonnexion will however only be performing on the Friday evening.
Performing on both evenings will be musician & poet Loit Sôls who has also been on the line-up of the 2015 event.
Loit also known as Goema-Loit who is a qualified graphic designer and sculptor has travelled the world and performed on various international stages including the Edinburgh International Arts Festival, and has in fact lived for some time in Scotland.
His roots as a street musician and street poet however remains unmistakeable and his passion for working on issues relating to Khoe & San issues come through strongly in what he delivers on stage.
Also performing on both evenings and making his debut at this annual event is Hip Hop artists Bliksemstraal.
Bliksemstraal is known for his highly energetic performances and originally being a B-Boy (Hip Hop dancer) who still dances competitively and professionally we would not be surprised if he also includes a dance routine or twio in his set, but that remains to be seen.
Lyrically agile, Bliksemstraal does not shy away from tackling social issues in our communities in his songs.
Bliksemstraal has also recently taken forrays into acting and can currently be seen in Janine van Rooy aka Blaq Pearl's production Krotoa van Vandag which we recently mentioned in an article about Ladies proudly sporting their Natural Hair.
As with last year's event, providing an ambience between the different sets, spinning tracks in a range of genres from traditional Khoe & San music to Cape Ghoema Jazz, and of course some Local Hip Hop, the versatile Ryan 'Fifth-Element' Swano aka RyanTheForce will once again be the DJ on deck duty for both evenings.
