Long before borders, before tribes, and before the idea of “race”—people were moving, mixing, and making families across Southern Africa. In this video, we go all the way back to 40,000 years ago, tracing how the San, Khoekhoe, East African pastoralists, and Bantu-speaking farmers shaped the people we are today.
Using cutting-edge genetic research, Kaapie uncovers:
How the Khoe-San lived for tens of thousands of years.
When the Bantu-speaking groups actually arrived in Southern Africa.
Where and how mixing between groups took place.
What ancient DNA tells us about population replacement and shared ancestry.
AND…
Why many of our modern-day divisions make no sense
Whether you’re Tswana, Zulu, Xhosa, Venda, or anything in between — Your story might be more connected than you think.
WHY WE VIEW THIS VIDEO AS IMPORTANT
This video helps to dispel the myth that Khoe-San / Khoiosan and Bantu Peoples were two completely monolithic groups until the arrival of European colonisers.
It forces us to think about the fact that albeit that Coloured People are largely descendants of Khoe-San, while not all Coloureds are descendent from Khoe-San, AND Coloureds are not the only people exclusively the descendents opf Khoe-San.
The Genetic History of Southern Africa, and by extention The Genetic History of Coloured People is much more complex and nuanced than what we can imagine.
It is within this ‘Mixedness’ that we should seek to find Unity as South Africans.
