What a marvelous journey for Benni McCarthy that has led to this!
Being an FA Cup Winner as a Coach!
All those years he’s been a die-hard MUFC fan growing up in Hanover Park, playing in informal leagues and starting his pro career at Seven Stars in 1995. Benni became a sensation and a national hero, triumphantly traversing Europe, becoming the SA national team Bafana Bafana’s top goal scorer, and then his final stint as a player at Orlando Pirates where he retired in 2013.
Benni was also immortalised in a song by TKZee on which he also rapped called Shibobo, amed after his signature dribble move of passing the ball through a defenders legs on his way to scoring a goal.
Benni then started his career as a professional FIFA licenced top level coach, being able to speak five languages (wikki stuff says four, but they ain’t counting Afrikaans) he was destined to end up in in a European League after proving himself in his home country.
In 2015 Benni joined Sint Truiden in Belgium as assistant coach, then moved on to coach City of Cape Town and later Amazulu where he had great success.
Though never having had the honour of playing for his all-time favourite EPL club Manchester United, Benni McCarthy has made a huge impact on the Premier League club since being appointed as a first team coach at MUFC in 2022.
Who could have imagined all of this when as a 15-year-old boy from Hanover Park on the Cape Flats, Benedict Saul McCarthy, started playing for Crusaders in the informal “gangster league” where he was spotted by the pro club Seven Stars and started going on a lifelong trophy-winning journey.
Still in the 18 Area, Benni McCarthy is now an FA Cup Winning Coach with Manchester United after the Red Devils against the odds beat their derby rivals and the bookmakers favourites to win the trophy, Manchester City 2-1 on Saturday 15 May 2024.
