Kleinmond Petition to Establish a Dual-Medium Public High School

The beautiful seaside town of Kleinmond, with its growing population desperately needs a dual-medium high school and needs us all to support their petition.

In the picturesque town of Kleinmond, nestled against the backdrop of south-western South Africa’s breathtaking coastlines, lies a growing community with a pressing need.
It is long overdue for provincial education authority to establish a dual-medium public high school in Kleinmond.

As an advocate for the future of our children, I’ve witnessed first-hand the challenges facing these socioeconomically derserved communities. With a projected growth rate of 1.7% by 2027 (Overberg Annual and Oversight Report, 2023/2024), the demand for accessible, quality education within Kleinmond has never been more critical.

Why There is a Need For a High School in Kleinmond

Currently, students from these Kleinmond’s underserved groups face long commutes to schools outside this town. This not only places a financial and social burden on family dynamics, but also means that young learners start their day at a disadvantage, impacting longer travelling time and the challenges with social and academic performance. Without a proper educational facility (and as an affordable feeder school to the local primary schools), we risk perpetuating the cycle of poverty and learner retention, as education remains the cornerstone of economic mobility and personal growth in this community.

Studies consistently show that education can enhance social mobility. By establishing a public dual-medium high school (to address the needs of the community) in Kleinmond, this petition provides children with a learning environment that respects and integrates their linguistic and cultural backgrounds and gives them an opportunity amid their financial and social difficulties. Such an institution would not only serve as a place of learning but would be a hub for community activities, fostering unity and empowerment among Kleinmond’s residents.

The Need for a Population Survey & Feasibility Study

In light of these considerations, it is imperative that the local government, local communities, the Western Cape Education Department (WCED), and potential investors collaborate to make this vision a reality. We propose a survey and needs analysis be conducted to understand the exact educational requirements of Kleinmond’s population (as the last recorded census was done in 2011).

Following this, a feasibility study should be undertaken to identify appropriate sites, potential costs, and funding mechanisms in collaboration with the WCED and local government. Public-private partnerships can be explored, leveraging local businesses and philanthropists who understand the value of investing in our youth.
