Jou Ma Se Taal, Carissa and Real Kaapse Koesisters from Jozi

It was a flavourful day at the Silwerskermfees Film Festival savouring Jou Ma Se Taal, being emotionally filled by Carissa and munching on Real Kaapse Koesisters flown in from Jozi

Real Kaapse Koesisters made by Stephanie Pekeur and flown in from in from Jozi

Jou Ma Se Taal,  by Romantha Botha and Stephanie Pekeur, was in my calendar for yesterday, and I was on the phone with Steph when I booked my tickets for myself and Chantell Witten. That’s because Chantell told me about how Stephs delicious Koesisters made her day in JHB after Mario Claasen introduced her to Steph’s blessed hands.

Koesisters on a Plane

Toe vra ek soema ve Steph om van ha lekker Koesisters saam te bring oppie plane Kaap Toe. And I wanted Chantell to experience Steph’s gift of Authentic Storytelling on the big screen mos. Plus I have been following Romanthea Botha so I knew this was an Afrikaans conversation I couldn’t miss for the sake of my own spirit.
This Silwerskermfees Film Festival was indeed going to be a tasty affair.

The other film I have been wanting to see for a very long time was the work of Deidré Jantjies and Jason Jacobs, the feature film Carissa, but all the tickets were sold out when I tried to book. But then I get a message from my primary school friend Munira Rahiman offering me to be her plus-one with the tickets she had won through a Buchu tea competition online.

Carissa Resonates with The Heart and The Land

Jinne julle, I am a huge fan of all of the creators I mentioned above and when Carissa started I wanted to cry because from start to finish it was clear that this work was created by listening to the land and environment. To experience film in that way resonated so deeply in acknowledgement and respect sat with my heart. Every element of this story was done with deep care, detail and consideration. The landscape spills the tea. Kanala, go see this because it’s how our ancestors intended for the story to be told. The actors are real, and the soundscape by Frazer Georgio Barry is from the environment.

Jou Ma se Taal & Steph’s Koesisters Both Flavourful

Next we got to see episode 1 of Jou Ma Se Taal, but before the screening I saw Wim Steyn who went onto his knees to make me understand how very special Steph’s Koesisters are. Wim, the producer of Jou Ma Se Taal, gave me the news that Steph had actually brought me Koesisters from JHB.

Now we must have a moment for those Koesisters my bru!!! The texture, the perfect syrup and flavor was like a hug from the person you love the most!

Tramakasie Steph. I always knew your gift was storytelling and you extend that magic into all that you do. Is diep lekker and julle documentary had tooooo many delicious voices in to even think about mentioning just one person and the feelings it brought in was like being in the right church.

The 2025 kykNET Silwerskermfees runs from 20 to 23 August.
