The kykNET Silwerskerm Festival, in partnership with the City of Cape Town and Sunshine Cinema, is taking the magic of cinema back to the people. This August, the festival extends beyond its usual glamorous Atlantic seaboard venues and heads directly into Cape Town’s communities, with two free solar-powered screenings. Local audiences will get the chance to experience powerful South African films at no cost, while watching alongside the very filmmakers and actors who created them.
The highlight event is the free screening of The Heart is a Muscle at Wynberg Civic Centre on Wednesday, 20 August 2025 at 18h00. Tickets are available on Quicket — at no charge — and the evening promises to be both moving and memorable.
A Story Rooted in Cape Town
Directed by Imran Hamdulay and produced by The Star Film Company, The Heart is a Muscle is a raw, humanist drama about love, loss, and the struggle to heal across generations. The story follows Ryan, a father whose weekend braai spirals into chaos when his son goes missing. As the search unfolds, Ryan’s past traumas and mistakes resurface, straining his marriage, his friendships, and his grip on hope.
Featuring standout performances from Keenan Arrison, Danny Ross, Loren Loubser, Melissa De Vries, and more, the film explores themes of forgiveness, resilience, and the courage needed to break cycles of generational pain. With its Cape Town setting and community-driven heart, the story resonates strongly with local audiences, making Wynberg a fitting place for its free screening.

Special Host & Local Flavour
Adding to the community atmosphere, the Silwerskerm Community Screenings will be hosted by the legendary Oscar Petersen, one of Cape Town’s most beloved stage, film, and television actors. Petersen will not only welcome audiences but also lead a post-screening Q&A with the filmmakers, creating space for meaningful conversations about the stories on screen.
And the experience doesn’t stop at the cinema doors. Food vendors will bring a taste of the city to the Civic Centre grounds. The Wynburger, hailed as one of Cape Town’s best burgers, will be served alongside sweet treats from Halibi Treats — waffles, coffee, and colourful slushies to round off the evening. It’s a celebration of local storytelling and local flavour, all powered by Sunshine Cinema’s solar mobile units.

UPDATE: The Community Screening of The Heart is a Muscle is Fully Booked Out… BUT…
A Limited Number of Tickets will be sold at the door to fill extra seats created by no-shows.
We at Bruinou.com will try to keep you updated on whether any new community screenngs will become available for this film.
A Festival with a Local Beat
The Silwerskerm Festival has become synonymous with discovering new voices and celebrating South African film talent. By taking screenings into spaces like Wynberg and Retreat, the festival underscores its commitment to inclusivity and cultural pride. Rather than simply premiering films for industry insiders and red-carpet audiences, Silwerskerm is bringing stories back to the people who inspired them.
For audiences in Wynberg, the screening of The Heart is a Muscle is more than just a night at the movies — it’s a chance to celebrate Cape Town stories told by Cape Town filmmakers. With themes of forgiveness, resilience, and the healing power of family, the film promises to leave hearts stirred and conversations flowing. And thanks to the Silwerskerm Festival’s outreach vision, those conversations will start right where they belong — in the community.
