It’s often true that we brown people tend to be afraid of trying new things since so many of us have this inherent belief that certain things are not for us.
If you have read anything I’ve written before, you would have noted that I’m not about that life. I am here to remind you to take up space, everywhere!

Try new things, go to new places. We belong everywhere and we must own it.
Nothing will change in this country until we change it ourselves.
Go to ‘their’ places. Eat ‘their’ food. The us and them mentality needs to die.

Introducing Zi Lee Sushi

I’m a bit late to the party with my summer recommendations but there’s no time like the present to get it started.
My first recommendation for this summer is Zi Lee Sushi. I am a huge fan of sushi and anyone who knows me knows that when it comes to sushi, my daughter could totally eat her parents out of house and home. Luckily, we don’t let her.
However, we made an exception for her birthday which we celebrated in recent months.
Allow me to introduce you to Zi Lee Sushi.

The Self-Taught Sushi Queen from Mitchell’s Plain

Aziza ‘Zi’ Hendricks decided to learn how to make her own sushi from watching YouTube videos. She experimented and eventually mastered the art. She ran her first ad on Women’s Day in 2023 and has been steadily working hard building her business and brand. She caters for corporate events and small orders. Her prices are affordable and good value for money.
You know those trendy sushi birthday cakes? She makes those.

Here is how I happened upon Zi Lee Sushi. We were looking to spoil my daughter with some takeout sushi for her birthday since it was a school night, and we didn’t have the capacity to go out, with it being exams and so on. The stars aligned for us because an old friend of mine started advertising Zi Lee Sushi on her Facebook page and I was curious to say the least.
It was also interesting to note on the Zi Lee Sushi Instagram Page that Aziza had already been interviewed on The Good Vibes lunchtime show on Goodhope FM hosted by DJ Ready D, and they are very picky about who they bring onto their What’s For Lunch segment.

I checked it out and called up Aziza to place my order. I asked her to recommend some things and proceeded to order some platters. The result was absolutely fabulous!
Aziza does her own thing so you will not find the conventional run of the mill menu. The flavours are unique and straight up delicious!

Realising The Best Sushi in Cape Town is in Mitchell’s Plain

Now I have eaten sushi at most of the top recommended restaurants in Cape Town. Some of these places have undeserved rave reviews to be honest. However, I can safely say that Zi Lee did not disappoint. Her sushi is bursting with new and different flavours. She takes you on a salmon journey of note and you will be thrilled you came there. Our family ate to our heart’s content and it was so worth the drive for me.
Zi Lee Sushi is located in Portlands in Mitchell’s Plain making a new experience accessible to those in Mitchell’s Plain and surrounding areas which are a bit far from the leafy suburbs and upmarket areas, where you’d conventionally find sushi restaurants and takeaway joints.

I am a firm believer in supporting small businesses and even more so when it is brown-owned. If you are looking for something new to try, then check out Zi Lee Sushi for arguably the best sushi in Cape Town.
Aziza Hendricks, thank you for the special treat. It was amazing!
