Spinners, the South African series production starring Cantona James bagged three important awards at Dakar Series 2023.
The festival in Dakar, Senegal, awaded Spinners for Best TV Series, Best Editing and Best Performance to lead actor Cantona James.
Dakar Series is a Pan African televison series production festival aimed exclusively at showcasing Televisin and Streaming Services productions on and from the African Continent which this year ran from 3 to 6 May.
Filmed in Cape Town, Spinners stars Cantona James as Ethan, a 17-year-old driver working for a local gang but his newfound talent opens up a whole new world for him.
Ethan is a good kid born on the wrong side of town. In Cape Town’s slums where local gangs make the law, he is soon left with no choice but to work for one of them to support himself and his younger brother.
Caught in a web of crime, he discovers he has an incredible talent for spinning, an exciting and extreme motorsport.
Could this be his way out from the violent criminal life that seems to be the only option to survive in his neighbourhood?
The English/Kaaps/Afrikaans drama is a co-production between Showmax and CANAL+, and the Spinners cast includes Arendsvlei actors Cantona James and Chelsea Thomas in leading roles, along with Dillon Windvogel (Blood & Water) and SAFTA winner Brendon Daniels (Zulu, Skemerdans).
Synonymous with Hi pHop and himself a luminary in South African Car Culture, DJ Ready D is the music supervisor and he’s also composed some of the tracks for the series, so we know the Sountrack of Spnners is gonna be awesome.
Directed by Jaco Bouwer, #Spinners is co-created by producer Joachim Landau and Benjamin Hoffman of Empreinte Digitale and we can’t wait for it to start streaming on SHOWMAX in the second half of 2023.
